Test Your Steering with This Drill

It doesn’t matter if you compete or prefer spending time with your horse on a ranch or trail, you need to be able to steer him with your hands and feet.  Being able to subtly guide your horse in the show pen will also help you mark higher scores, and it can help you feel safe when you’re doing a difficult maneuver.

What Kind of Experience Will Your Horse Get Out of Your Next Ride?

Look at where your horse has come from in your training and where you would like to go.  Plan out the kind of steps you need to reach your goals.  If every ride could be a positive step in that direction, every ride should be a good one.  Clarity and gradual progress is the key to helping your horse get the most out of your next ride.

Understand Your Horse's Eyesight

How your horse sees the world may explain why he does what he does.  The horse’s eyeball is the largest orb found in any land mammal and his large retina means that everything he sees is magnified.  Up-close objects look 50% larger than they appear to you.

On Attention - The Eye as a Window into Your Horse's Soul

Quite simply put, the eyes show us where the attention is, and the attention shows us where the mind is.  If we are standing to one side of the horse and we watch the eye, we can see when the pupil is back and towards us, or forward wit hthe focus being to the other side, away from us.  If we are mounted and the horse is flexed laterally, we can see the same thing.
